Cheese and Tomato Sandwiches

I just finished lunch - an enjoyable sandwich of cheese, tomato, and mayo. It’s one of my favorites! I’ve ordered cheese sandwiches in restaurants but invariably they muck them up. They put too much stuff on them - sprouts, avocado (love it, just not on this sandwich), funky spreads, pickles, etc... There’s a simple elegance to cheese, tomato, and mayo on good bread.

I think we do the same thing in business. We make things more complex than they need to be. You know what I am talking about: flavor of the month programs, fancy assessments, special employee relations project teams, etc...

Think back to the early management books worth their salt (ala Drucker, Bennis, Demming, even Peters) and then at the better management books produced today. The basics are still the same.

I’ll take the cheese and tomato sandwich, please. Hold all the other crap.
